​Today’s mini B1 lesson is about verbs that need a direct object before ‘to + infinitive’.

​When we use two verbs together, sometimes the second verb is in the infinitive with ‘to’. Here are some verbs that are followed by ‘to + infinitive’.

• Agree: She agreed to help.
• Decide: I decided to go home.
• Learn: He learned to speak excellent English.

​Sometimes we also need to use a direct object after the first verb.

For example, we need to say ‘he told ME to sit down’. (The direct object is ‘me’.)

We CAN’T say ‘he told to sit down’.

​Here’s a list of verbs that MUST have a direct object before ‘to + infinitive’.

• Advise: I advise you to go now.
• Encourage: She encouraged us to take the exam.
• Invite: He invited me to come to the meeting.
• Order: They ordered the soldiers to stand up.
• Persuade: She persuaded us to help.
• Remind: The teacher reminded us to bring our books.
• Teach: She is teaching the children to read.
• Tell: He told me to sit down.
